Happy Heart Day!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
I can’t believe it’s just around the corner! I love to make sure Valentine's Day is special. My husband and I usually celebrate by cooking a delicious meal together. Let’s be real though; I buy the ingredients and he does the cooking! When I go to the grocery store, I always plan ahead by not only making a list of things to buy, but I make sure to pack my Zero Waste Shopping Kit!
My Zero Waste shopping kit is pretty simple and includes:
Cotton tote bags (Or reusable grocery bag)
Jars for spices or bulk liquids
Large containers to pack meat from the butcher
Some stores, like Community Natural Foods, let you bring your own bags and containers and will tare them for you so that you don’t pay for the weight of them! You can ditch the non-recyclable butcher paper by bringing your own container to Co-Op or your local butcher and have them put your meat directly into your own container. I’ve been doing that ever since I moved to Calgary from San Francisco and it’s worked every time!
I really enjoy how little waste I make from using my own Zero Waste Shopping Kit, and think it can be a fun challenge to find ways to reduce our waste as much as possible - make it a family affair!
As a result, my husband and I make less than one plastic grocery bag worth of waste per month!
How do you plan ahead? What tips and tricks do you have to prevent waste? We would love to hear your ideas!
Until next time…
XO, Jessica
